βour creeds
β
Apostles’ Creedββββ
History: The Apostlesβ Creed is the collected teachings and beliefs of Christβs Apostles in the 2nd century, with the version we read today likely having been finalized in the 5th century. It serves as a unifying declaration of faith for Christians, emphasizing fundamental Christian doctrines. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.Β I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord,Β who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,Β was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.Β From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.Β I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. *that is, the true Christian church of all times and all places.
Nicene Creedβ
History: The Nicene Creed was produced at the First Council of Nicea, which was convened by Emperor Constantine in 325 AD to address the Arian controversy that questioned the divinity of Jesus Christ. The Nicene Creed is a detailed statement of Christian orthodoxy, affirming the three persons of the Trinity and Jesus Christ as both fully God and fully human. βWe believe in one God,Β the Father almighty,Β maker of heaven and earth,Β of all things visible and invisible.Β And in one Lord Jesus Christ,Β the only Son of God,Β begotten from the Father before all ages, God from God,Β Light from Light, true God from true God,Β begotten, not made; of the same essence as the Father.Β Through him all things were made.Β For us and for our salvation, He came down from heaven; He became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and was made human.Β He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;Β He suffered and was buried.Β The third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures.Β He ascended to heavenΒ and is seated at the right hand of the Father.Β He will come again with glory to judge the living and the dead.Β His kingdom will never end.Β And we believe in the Holy Spirit,Β the Lord, the giver of life.Β He proceeds from the Father and the Son,Β and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified. He spoke through the prophets.Β We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.Β We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.Β We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,Β and to life in the world to come.Β Amen.
